Episode 6: Tim Davy | Vulnerable Children: Hostility, Hospitality, and Hope

Hostility, Hospitality, and Hope: A Biblical Reflection on Two Displaced Children

Tim Davy

Tim Davy reflects on the biblical stories of two vulnerable children in the Bible and what this might mean for the Church’s thinking and practice of mission.

In today’s episode Tim shares an article he wrote for Redcliffe’s Encounters Mission Journal, which looks at the stories of the anonymous slave girl in 2 Kings 5 and Mary, Joseph and Jesus’ escape to Egypt in Matthew 2:13-15.

This Summer sees the launch of a new module at Redcliffe for people working with or on behalf of vulnerable children (sometimes called ‘children-at-risk’).

Vulnerable Children module

The module ‘Vulnerable Children: Bible, Theology and Society’ will be running 16-20 July as part of our UK Summer School. It can be taken as a validated part of our MA in Contemporary Missiology programme or as an unvalidated standalone option for continuing professional development. For more details see the Redcliffe website: Vulnerable Children: Bible, Theology and Society. We are delighted to be partnering with Home for Good in delivering this module. (NB. the module is subject to validation by University of Gloucestershire)

Episode 5: Martyn Snow, Israel Olofinjana, and Rosalee Velloso Ewell | Contexts of Mission in the UK

What excites you about mission where you are?

What happens when a Bishop, a Pastor-Theologian, and a Principal take a break from a Redcliffe Trustees meeting? We managed to get these trustees in a room to ask them what’s exciting them about mission in their contexts!

Bishop Martyn Snow

Martyn Snow is Bishop of Leicester and Chair of Redcliffe’s Board of Trustees. In a very multicultural diocese that comprises rural and urban settings, what are the challenges and encouragements for churches engaged in God’s mission?

Israel Olofinjana

Israel Olofinjana is Pastor of Woolwich Central Baptist Church in London and recently joined Redcliffe as a Trustee. He is the founding director of Centre for Missionaries from the Majority World and recently edited the volume, African Voices: Towards African British Theologies. He will also be giving some lectures in our 2018 Summer School module, The Practice of Christian Mission in European Contexts. For Israel’s context, key issues include regeneration, youthwork, wealth and poverty, crime, and housing.

Rosalee Velloso Ewell

Rosalee Velloso Ewell, Redcliffe’s Principal, shares about her own home setting in Birmingham and talks about being ‘neighbours on purpose’ in a diverse community.

Living in the UK or more widely within Europe and wanting to think more about mission in your context? Why not join our Summer School this year where you can meet Israel Olofinjana and explore The Practice of Christian Mission in European Contexts.

Episode 4: Lindsey Holley | Biblica and the NIrV Accessible Bible

Lindsey Holley is Executive Director of Biblica Europe. In a recent visit to Redcliffe Lindsey was sharing about the remarkable NIrV Accessible Bible and we just had to capture this for the podcast!

Episode 3: Member Care | Panel discussion on recent research

Our recent graduation day was a brilliant opportunity to get some Member Care graduates and lecturers in a room. In this panel discussion Tim was joined by graduates Ally Gibson, Marina Prins and Helen Johnston, and lecturers Sarah Hay, Rosie Button, and Marion Knell. Ally, Marina and Helen talk about their dissertation research, which illustrates why we are so excited about our unique MA in Member Care programme!

Episode 2: Matt Wisbey | Migration, Urbanisation & Multilingualism

It seems like most weeks at least one member of the Redcliffe Faculty team is participating in a gathering of people engaged in mission thinking and practice. One of our aims for the podcast is to hear about these events and capture the mission conversations going on around the world.

In this episode Matt Wisbey, lecturer on our MA in Literacy Programme Development, tells us about a recent Community of Practice event he was involved in. Focused on the theme of ‘Migration, Urbanisation, and Multilingualism’, it was held in Singapore, a place that reflected very well the issues of the conference.

We found it fascinating to learn more about these big themes in mission, and thought Matt’s reflections offered some really helpful examples of good practice for organising successful conferences. The event was also captured using storify, which you can read here: CoP event storify page

She also shares about some of her current writing projects, what she was doing prior to taking up her new role, and why joining Redcliffe has felt like ‘coming home’.
