On BMS, Asia, mission trends and issues, and renewing friendships

Kang-San and Loun

Kang-San Tan and Loun Ling Lee were lecturers at Redcliffe before joining CMS in 2012 to develop mission training across Asia. Based again in the UK Kang-San is now General Director of BMS and Loun is involved in mission training, not least through rejoining Redcliffe’s teaching team.

In today’s episode Rosalee and Tim chat with Kang-San and Loun about their previous time at Redcliffe, their involvement in mission training in Asia, and their new roles here in the UK. We also talk about some significant trends and issues in mission and ask what good partnership looks like in mission today.

Episode 9: Rosie Button | Women in Missiology Network

Women in Missiology network

Rosie Button_round

Redcliffe recently launched a network that aims to connect and promote women teaching, researching, writing and studying in Missiology. In this week’s episode Rosalee talks to Redcliffe lecturer Rosie Button about why it was started and how we can all benefit from it.

Women in Missiology is a network of women teaching, researching, writing, and studying in the field of missiology. It provides a space to connect, to learn, and to resource the Church. This happens through three main ways: a closed Facebook group for connecting and sharing ideas and resources; a consultation to meet and learn together, and encourage one another to excellence; and a curated bibliography.

The network will hold its first consultation on 6-7 June at IMC in Birmingham in the UK. This 24-hour women-only event aims to:

  • connect women engaged in missiology
  • engage with papers on the consultation theme of, ‘The Bible and Mission’
  • give a space to share experiences and raise issues involved in being a woman working in the field of missiology
  • encourage the next generation of women scholars
  • help shape the network’s future

Keynote speakers include Dr Cathy Ross on ‘Lament and Hope: “There are things that can be seen only with eyes that have cried.”’ and Dr Mary Evans on ‘Old Testament Narrative and its Missional Significance.’

NOTE – we have received funding to heavily subsidise the places for students. See the website for more details.

Immediately following the Women in Missiology consultation is the Global Connections Mission Educators Forum on 7-8 June. The theme for this year’s 24-hour gathering is ‘Gender and Mission Education’. Participants will be exploring together how we equip people for mission in a way that helps them to understand and work through an increasing and complex array of Gender-related issues. Plenary speakers include Dr Mary Evans and Dr Elaine Storkey.

Why not come to both?!

And if you want to explore issues of Gender: As well as being course facilitator for Redcliffe’s MA in Member Care, Rosie also leads our module, Gender and Mission.

Episode 8: Rob Hay | Leading in the midst of uncertainty

Rob Hay - Leading in the Midst of Uncertainty

Rob Hay

We quiz visiting lecturer and former Principal Rev Dr Rob Hay on leading in the midst of uncertainty. Rob recently completed his PhD on the topic, with particular reference to ideas of complexity, and explains why it is important for leaders to acknowledge uncertainty and find new ways of leading.

Join Faculty members Rosie Button, Sarah Hay, Chris Ducker and Tim Davy as we talk with Rob and get our heads around complexity theory, discover its very practical implications for leaders, and realise we were ‘lab rats’ in Rob’s research!

Rev Dr Rob Hay is Head of Learning and Ministry Development for the Diocese of Leicester. Before taking up that role in 2017 he was Principal at Redcliffe College and continues to teach on Redcliffe’s Leadership in a Complex World MA Programme.

If you want to explore your own role as a leader further why not sign up for our Leadership in a Complex World MA programme? You can begin it at our Summer School this July, at our Autumn or Spring long weekend intensives, or even at our Oceania hub in Australia in late January 2019.

Alternatively, why not audit one of the leadership modules as a non-validated ‘Active Participant’ at our UK Summer School? ‘An Introduction to Global Leadership’ runs 16-20 July and ‘Organisational Development and Cultural Change’ runs 23-27 July.

Episode 6: Tim Davy | Vulnerable Children: Hostility, Hospitality, and Hope

Hostility, Hospitality, and Hope: A Biblical Reflection on Two Displaced Children

Tim Davy

Tim Davy reflects on the biblical stories of two vulnerable children in the Bible and what this might mean for the Church’s thinking and practice of mission.

In today’s episode Tim shares an article he wrote for Redcliffe’s Encounters Mission Journal, which looks at the stories of the anonymous slave girl in 2 Kings 5 and Mary, Joseph and Jesus’ escape to Egypt in Matthew 2:13-15.

This Summer sees the launch of a new module at Redcliffe for people working with or on behalf of vulnerable children (sometimes called ‘children-at-risk’).
